Thomasina Bateman, an antiquarian is at present writing a novel about barrows found in England. It will document the treasures that she discovers within. An intriguing letter calls her to the tiny village of Bewlay which is hidden away in the remote countryside she travels by train along with her friend for a few days behind.
On her arrival her mysterious companion who was supposed to summon her cannot be located. Her assistant never arrives. An uncompromising landowner denies access to the barrow and even the residents are wary of the lady who is walking on her own in her own vehicle and (gasp!) wears trousers.
The digging of Hob’s Barrow is off to rough start. Then Thomasina begins to have strange dreams…
